14 July 2008

An international competition for secondary school students in the Asia Pacific is being conducted as part of Privacy Awareness Week, 24 - 30 August 2008.

The closing date for the competition has been extended to 8 August 2008 to allow students across the country more time to complete their entries.

Launched in May, the competition calls for students to create a two minute video about any aspect of privacy, such as their opinion of its relevance in today’s society, how it does or doesn’t affect them in their daily life, or perhaps the influence that the internet has had on privacy.

"Today’s youth have grown up in an electronic age where information is freely shared online. However, privacy is still a valuable and precious thing and we often don’t appreciate how important it is until it's gone" said Ms Karen Curtis, Australian Privacy Commissioner.

"We are keen to engage with young Australians to hear what they think about privacy. The competition is an opportunity for students to express their ideas on this important issue, and possibly win some great prizes at the same time," said Ms Curtis.

The winners will be announced during Privacy Awareness Week.

Further details on the competition and Privacy Awareness Week are available at www.privacyawarenessweek.org.
