ASSIGNMENT OF DUTIES
TITLE: Deputy Director

DUTIES:
- 1. Successfully lead a policy team in delivering high quality advice including through the provision of effective supervision and support of staff.
- 2. Provide high quality advice, to the Privacy Commissioner on the application of the Privacy Act 1988 and other complex privacy matters.
- 3. Develop high quality advice for Commonwealth and ACT government agencies and private sector organisations on the application of the Privacy Act 1988 and other complex privacy matters.
- 4. Undertake analysis, research, consultation and project management regarding privacy issues.
- 5. Analyse, advise on and monitor legislative, policy, technological and other relevant developments in privacy and personal information handling in the public and private sectors.
- 6. Draft high-level correspondence, reports, submissions, guidelines, statutory instruments and other materials.
- 7. Represent the Privacy Commissioner, as required, at external events such as meetings, seminars and conferences.
These duties are to be performed in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct and APS Values and Office policies, including Workplace Diversity and Occupational Health and Safety. Under section 25 of the Public Service Act 1999 the Office may determine the duties of an employee from time to time.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
- 1. Demonstrated experience in successfully leading small teams, including the effective supervision of staff in a changing environment.
- 2. A working knowledge of privacy law in Australia, particularly at a federal level, as well as broader, contemporary privacy issues or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
- 3. Demonstrated high-level advice-giving skills in relation to policy, legislation and technological matters. This includes demonstrating strong skills in analysis, drafting, consultation and evaluation.
- 4. Demonstrated high level written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise correspondence, reports and submissions.
- 5. Demonstrated excellent liaison, consultation, negotiation and oral communication skills.
- 6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within and across teams, particularly in managing projects successfully.
- 7. Ability to show sound judgement, balanced decision-making, initiative and creativity.
Desirable
- 8. Tertiary qualifications, such as those in business, the law, information and communications technology or social/health sciences.
